46 flats go up for rent after former Kettering George Hotel conversion project

House hunters will be able to choose from 46 flats which have been created by the conversion of Kettering’s former George Hotel in Sheep Street.

Builders moved on the site in August 2024 and have been working for more than two years on plans, including an extension to add more apartments.

The ‘luxury apartments’ in the renamed George House are being marketed by Simpson and Partners with the asking price of £1,100 per calendar month (£254 per week) for a two-bedroom, one bathroom flat. Single-bedroom flats are on the market from £825 pcm.

Paticulars state: “Simpson and Partners are delighted to welcome these brand new luxury apartments at George House to the rental market.

“Set within the stunning renovation of the renowned George Hotel, this impressive development comprises 46 beautifully finished apartments, combining the character of the original building with modern living.

“Each apartment has been finished to an immaculate standard, with stylish fitted kitchens, contemporary bathrooms and bespoke lighting throughout.

“The attention to detail gives the apartments a high-quality feel, making them an ideal choice for anyone looking for something a little different in the heart of the town centre.”

Accommodation offered in one second floor flat comprises an entrance hall, generous living/kitchen/dining area with brand new kitchen, two double bedrooms and fitted bathroom.

People renting an apartment in the new development in the town centre have been promised intercom entry system, bespoke lighting and ‘high specification throughout’.

The Kettering hotel closed its doors to guests more than 10 years ago – its most recent rebrand finished its life as The Naseby Hotel operated by Best Western, but this closed in March 2016.

Plans were submitted to the former Kettering Borough Council in July 2018 for the partial demolition and redevelopment of the site to provide 29 residential apartments and a restaurant with five off-street parking spaces.

A further planning application was submitted to Kettering Borough Council in July 2020 when the changes were made to create ‘multiple occupancy accommodation’ of 46 bedrooms including a gym, lounge areas, coffee base, meeting/workspaces and a restaurant.

But the lack of off-street vehicle parking (only five spaces) contributed to the reasons for its refusal.

The developer then appealed to the Planning Inspectorate where the refusal was overturned in March 2021. Inspectors said parking concerns could eased by new residents using public town centre car parks.

Plans originally put forward by Magic Living Ltd were taken on by another company, BM Sheep Ltd, which transformed the sprawling three-storey building into flats.

During the conversion some interior features were demolished and asbestos removed. Plans had included an inner courtyard space and an on-site gym for residents.

Documents forming part of the planning documents estimate the scheme’s value at £4,245,750.

The George Hotel includes some historic elements that date from the 16th century when it was called The Cock Inn but has been extended, redeveloped and altered significantly over the years.

Before being replaced by the Piccadilly Buildings in 1926, the hotel’s stables ran the length of Sheep Street to the corner of Northampton Road where a stone arched entrance still exists.
