Kettering soapbox racing plan for town centre streets

Fans of soapbox racing will be able to enjoy the spectacular sport next year thanks to plans by Kettering Town Council (KTC).

Kettering Town Council (KTC) has already invited event operators to plan, promote, manage and deliver an annual public soapbox event in the town centre.

The initial £160,000 contract will cover events in 2027, 2028 and 2029, with an option to extend for a further event in 2030.

Pencilled in for a possible late-summer date, it is believed the race could see Bowling Green Road used for a downhill section with a possible pitlane in the town centre.

KTC is seeking a ‘safe, professionally-managed, visually-engaging event’ that attracts participants and spectators, supports town-centre footfall and creates a ‘distinctive annual experience for Kettering’.

A decision will be made at the KTC meeting on November 9 with the contract starting in mid-December.

Previous soapbox races have been held at Wicksteed Park. There are also events at Rushden, Earls Barton and Welton near Daventry.
