‘Bonnie deserves this opportunity’

A family is rallying to raise money for an orthotic helmet after baby Bonnie was diagnosed with flat head syndrome.

The condition, known as plagiocephaly, requires a head brace to be worn until Bonnie is 18-months old.

But the treatment is classified as cosmetic and not funded by the NHS, meaning the helmet will cost the family around £3,000.

Bonnie’s auntie Amy Crawley is spearheading the campaign to raise the money, as her brother Oliver is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

Amy said: “I started this fundraiser to offer support to my little niece Bonnie, who has been diagnosed with plagiocephaly. This requires an orthotic helmet or head brace to help support an improved shape and space for her little brain and skull.

“We are beyond relieved that this was not a life-threatening condition but it is classed as a cosmetic condition, and therefore treatment is not available for free on the NHS.

“Bonnie is the youngest of my brother Oliver and sister-in-law Vickie’s children, sister to Archie.

“They have been through a lot, and Oliver is powering through his almost 12th cycle of chemo following a brain tumour.

“He is unable to drive so my parents are doing a lot of hospital trips, so this is for them too.

“We are all fed up of hospitals, heads and brains, but Bonnie deserves this opportunity.”

So far, some £2,300 of the £2,400 target has been raised, which will cover the deposit for the helmet.

Amy added: “Thank you to those offering words of support, solidarity, making donations and sharing.

“Oliver and Vickie are beyond themselves with gratitude and we are pushing on for now.”
