A supermarket cafe could be lost to make way for Argos
Sainsbury's has confirmed that it is speaking to staff about plans to replace the cafe at its superstore in Northampton Road, Wellingborough, with an Argos store.
As part of these proposals, it has said it is also looking at closing the Argos shop in Rushden High Street.
The news comes just six months after the supermarket giant confirmed it would not be re-opening the Wellingborough branch of Argos in the Swansgate Shopping Centre.A Sainsbury’s spokesman told the Northants Telegraph: “We’re listening to our customers and reviewing the services we offer so that we can create the best possible experience in our stores.
“We are speaking to colleagues about our plans to open a new Argos store inside our Wellingborough Sainsbury’s.
"This will replace the cafe and we are proposing to close our Rushden and Wellingborough Argos stores as a result of these proposals.
“We understand this will be an unsettling time for the colleagues involved and we will support them in any way we can.
"This includes looking at redeployment opportunities and alternative roles available within the business.”
Sainsbury's recently revealed plans to open 350 more Argos stores in Sainsbury’s and Argos collection points in supermarkets and convenience stores by March 2024.
Without the need for as many Argos standalone stores, they are set to close around 420 branches, bringing the UK Argos standalone store estate to around 100 by March 2024.
