Sainsbury's, which owns the Argos brand, said that it will not reopen any of the 120 stores that had remained closed since the end of lockdown which includes the Wellingborough town centre shop. It also plans to shut a further 300 standalone stores by March 2024, although 150 Argos counters will open within Sainsbury's stores.

There will be 3,500 job losses as a result.

Argos shops in Rushden, Kettering and Corby will remain open for now although their long-term future is uncertain. The Argos counter within Sainsbury's in Northampton Road, Wellingborough, will remain open.

Boss Simon Roberts said yesterday (Thursday, November 5) said Sainsbury's was responding to changing consumer habits and the growth of online shopping.
