Goodband strikes early as Corinthians take the derby honours

Ryan Goodband's early goal settled the Easter Monday derby as Rothwell Corinthians completed a superb weekend in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division with a 1-0 win at Desborough Town.

Goodband struck inside the first minute at the Waterworks Field and that proved to be enough for Shaun Sparrow’s team, who are now closing in on securing their top-flight status after earning promotion last season.

Justin Dowling scored a late equaliser as Wellingborough Town moved three points clear of the drop-zone with a 1-1 draw at Cogenhoe United.

Jack Bowen had given the Cooks a first-half lead but Dowling was the Doughboys hero as he curled home from 18 yards in the final minute.

The only game involving the local clubs to survive the weather in Division One saw Thrapston Town beaten 1-0 at Peterborough Sports - a win that confirmed the runaway leaders as champions.

Ian Walker’s side put up stern resistance but Avelino Vieira grabbed the only goal for the hosts just before the hour mark.

There are due to be two matches in Division One this evening with Burton Park Wanderers hosting second-placed ON Chenecks at Latimer Park while a local bragging rights are at stake at Kiln Park where Raunds Town entertain Rushden & Higham United.
