Wellingborough man given Criminal Behaviour Order for being 'aggressive and intimidating' towards people who didn't give him money

47-year-old Jack Gardner has been given a three-year criminal behaviour order for causing ‘distress and alarm’ to people in Wellingborough town centre.

Gardner, of Pope Road, Wellingborough, appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court having been charged with six breaches of a Community Protection Notice between September 4 and 23.

Several complaints to Northamptonshire Police’s neighbourhood policing team were made about Gardner’s aggressive and intimidating behaviour towards those who did not give him money.

When asked to move away from areas within the town centre, Gardner became verbally abusive.

Anti-social Behaviour sergeant Grace Manwaring, of Northamptonshire Police, said: “Tackling and preventing anti-social behaviour remains a priority for the Force, which includes making our town centres and public spaces safer places for everyone.

“We have exhausted all other avenues to try and tackle Jack Gardner’s poor behaviour, but he has shown absolutely no regard for the law or others. His behaviour was having a detrimental effect on the local area, and we simply cannot let this continue.

“The Anti-Social Behaviour Team worked together with the Wellingborough Neighbourhood Policing Team to secure the order and without the hard work and good working relationship between our departments this would not have been possible.

“The neighbourhood policing team worked tirelessly with the community to collate evidence and with the support of their colleagues in the Anti-Social Behaviour Team, this resulted in the order being granted.

“By issuing details of the order along with his photograph, we can make the community aware of the restrictions imposed. If anyone sees Gardner breaching the terms of this order, please report it so we can take further action.”

The order was granted by Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 19 after a joint application submitted by the Wellingborough Neighbourhood Policing and Anti-Social Behaviour Teams.

It prevents Gardner from entering a designated area of Wellingborough town centre, consuming alcohol in public other than on a licenced premises, possessing an open vessel of alcohol within the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) area, and approaching people to ask for money or to cause them ‘alarm, distress or nuisance.’

Should Gardner fail to comply with the order, he faces arrest as well as the possible risk of further prosecution.
