The airport arrivals hall is a lousy place to find out what your network charges for data. Here’s what you can sort before you fly, including one option that gives you backup data even after your trip ends

You’ve landed for a Christmas market weekend, it’s already dark and the instructions for getting into your apartment are sitting in an email that won’t load. You could join everyone else trying to get onto the airport Wi-Fi, or you could sort out how your phone will get online before you leave home.

Whether you’re off to Prague for a weekend or escaping to the Canaries for a week, it’s worth checking what your mobile provider charges for data abroad. Some UK plans already cover European roaming, so you may not need to buy anything. But if yours charges by the day, a travel eSIM gives you another price to compare before you fly.

An eSIM is a digital SIM, so there’s nothing to swap out of your phone. If your handset is unlocked and supports eSIMs, you can install a second line for mobile data and keep your regular SIM and WhatsApp number. The trick is to do the fiddly bit at home, when you’ve got Wi-Fi and nobody’s waiting for you to work out which train goes into town.

Holafly lets you look up your destination and choose a plan for the length of your trip. It sells individual destination plans as well as regional eSIMs, which are worth comparing if you’re fitting two Christmas markets in different countries into one trip. Check the plan details if you’re counting on tethering a laptop or sharing data with the kids, as hotspot allowances can differ from what you get on the phone itself.

The bit that caught my eye is what happens after the plan ends. If you leave the eSIM installed, Holafly’s Always On feature gives you 1GB of backup data every 30 days at no extra cost in supported destinations. Unused data doesn’t roll over, and you’ll want to check where it works. But it could come in handy if your return flight is cancelled and you need to find a hotel for another night, or if you land on your next trip and realise you’ve forgotten to arrange data altogether.

If you do go down this route, check the instructions for when your plan starts, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and switch off data roaming on your regular SIM. Keeping your UK SIM in the phone doesn’t stop your provider charging for calls or texts, so check those rates separately.

The easiest way to tell if it’s worth doing is to put in your destination and trip length, then compare the total with what your network would charge for the same trip. Five minutes on the sofa beats trying to work it all out at arrivals.
