Tributes to former Kettering business owner and 'gentleman' who has died aged 90
Tributes have been paid to Richard Lillyman, owner of former Kettering town centre business Dalkeith Ironmongers, who has died aged 90.
Richard was a partner in Dalkeith Ironmongers, a family business which was located in Horsemarket, Kettering.
The well-known hardware shop was founded by Richard’s father, Ernest Lillyman and his partner, Frank Corvesor. When they retired, the two sons Richard and Leo took over.
Born in Neale Avenue, Kettering, Richard also went to school in the town.

In his teens, he served a three-year apprenticeship at Mawer & Saunders hardware store in Market Harborough before joining the RAF for his compulsory National Service.
During his apprenticeship he met Pam at a local dance and from then on they were a couple. She would later become his wife.
After three years in the RAF Richard joined the family firm in 1958 and he and Pam also became engaged. They were married in August 1959 and enjoyed 67 happy years together.
They had two sons, Nick and Kris, who both have successful businesses and Richard was very proud of each one, as he was with his two daughters-in-law, Teresa and Annette.
Describing his father as a ‘true gentleman,’ Kris said: “He was a devoted family man who adored his four grandchildren Scarlett, Martyn, Dexter and Daniel – he and Pam spent many happy hours taking them on day trips and family holidays.
"Ever reliable, with a quick wit and a kind, caring nature, Richard was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was also a proud great-grandfather to two little boys, Ben and Max.”
In 1992, Richard and Leo decided to close the business. Richard went on to work for a friend and ex-customer in Geddington until his eventual retirement.
After retiring, Richard and Pam embarked on a new adventure by moving to France where they spent twelve ‘glorious’ years which, both agreed, were some of the happiest times of their life.
In 2014, by which time they were both in their late seventies, they decided ‘reluctantly’ to return to the UK to be nearer to the family.
Richard passed away aged 90.
Funeral details will be announced by Averil Phillips & Family Kettering.
