Work under way on new dog walking field at Northamptonshire beauty spot

Work has started on a new dog walking field at Stanwick Lakes.

Rangers have been working with volunteers to prepare the field at the 750-acre countryside attraction and nature reserve in the heart of Northamptonshire's Nene Valley.

The latest addition to Stanwick Lakes was first announced on social media several months ago and has attracted a lot of positive comments, including ‘can’t wait for this to open’.

Ranger Isaac has given an update on the new facility, saying: “We've been continuing to develop our dog walking field, getting it in shape for both dogs and humans.

"Our volunteers have put a sturdy bench in, doing a particularly excellent job at getting it level.

"We built some steps for easier access and raked up the clippings leftover from a recent mow and strim.

"Our volunteers have also worked hard removing some of the tree stumps that could pose a trip hazard, and this will make field maintenance, like mowing with our bigger equipment, possible in the future."

According to the Stanwick Lakes website, the secure dog walking field will be a private, enclosed space where dogs can enjoy the freedom to exercise off lead in a safe and relaxed environment, away from traffic, livestock and distractions.

And it adds: “Unlike much of the wider Stanwick Lakes site – where dogs are required to stay on leads in sensitive conservation areas to help protect ground-nesting birds, habitats and other wildlife – the dog field gives owners a dedicated area designed specifically for off-lead exercise and enrichment.”
