'Upset' as Wellingborough nursery confirms permanent closure

Parents, carers and staff have expressed their upset after a Wellingborough day nursery confirmed its permanent closure.

Wellingborough Day Nursery in Croyland Road suddenly closed its doors to children after an unannounced Ofsted inspection visit found muddy floors, a unflushed toilet and security concerns.

Emails were sent to parents and carers on Monday (November 2) telling them the nursery had shut, but it had been believed it could re-open after Christmas.

A new email sent at about 8.20pm last night (Tuesday, November 3) said the closure was to be permanent, they would receive a fees refund and directed parents to seek help from North Northants Council.

Cherie Copeland, nursery manager, wrote in the email: “We are sorry to announce that the decision has been made to permanently close Bambino’s Wellingborough Day Nursery with immediate effect.

“Any fees paid for November will be refunded to the original account from which payment was made.

"For any queries relating to government funded childcare hours or funding arrangements, we kindly ask that you contact your local authority directly, who will be best placed to provide guidance and support.

“We will be in touch to arrange a collection date for any children’s belongings. Should you require any medication which is held on site, or other urgent requirements, please contact us directly. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.”

Rated good in all areas in March 2023, two years later in October and November 2025, the nursery notified Ofsted about matters relating to ‘safeguarding policies and procedures, concerns about children's safety and welfare, suitable people, supporting and understanding children's behaviour’.

Inspectors made further visits to the The Old Station Nursery-managed facility in Croyland Road after concerns were raised again in February 2026 and most recently at the end of October after complaints of hygiene, security and learning and development.

Yesterday the nursery’s regional manager sought to reassure parents saying issues with the muddy pre-school bathroom, security of the premises and concerns of ‘learning and development’ were being addressed.

After the news broke, parents responded saying they were upset for the children and staff, some praising care from key workers.

One family member told the Northants Telegraph they had to step in to care for their grandchild to allow her daughter to work.

People looking for childcare provision can contact North Northants Council via FIS@[email protected] or call 01536 805027 to discuss alternative options.
