Carnival-goers and party-enthusiasts were catered for in Wellingborough as the town hosted a weekend of family fun and community pride.

Wellingborough Town Council decided to take on the running of the carnival and subsequent Party in the Park, and the droves of people who turned out in Croyland Park last weekend is a reassuring sign that the risk in taking on the event was worthwhile.

Cllr Graham Lawman, leader of Wellingborough Town Council, said: “Combined with Party in the Park on Sunday, this was a fabulous festival weekend with something for all the family to enjoy.

"The carnival is not only a great event to showcase local talent, but, also an opportunity for local groups to raise funds for the services they provide in the community.

"The event proved a great success thanks to the committee, staff, volunteers and participants.

“We hope this event will continue to go from strength to strength and we will gain even more participants next year.

"The word has started to spread that we are a council committed to and focused on the local community and we hope that this reputation will enable more people to get involved with what we do.

"We welcome everyone to be part of our events, whether participating or spectating, and are always welcoming new volunteers.”

The event was packed with colourful musical floats, characters and dancers, with the procession departing Broad Green at midday, heading through the crowded town centre streets to Croyland Park. There waited the funfair, arena acts and music which were ready to greet attendees to finish off an action-packed afternoon.

Contributors to the event were handed awards on the stage. First prize for Best Community Group (with no float) went to Wellingborough Walks Action Group, who dressed as trees and wildlife often found nesting in local green spaces. Glamis Hall was awarded the top spot for Best Decorated Community Float, dressing up as characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
