Swansgate Shopping Centre leak worsens despite council 'arranging regular maintenance checks'
A long-standing leak in the roof of the bridge connecting Wellingborough's Swansgate Shopping Centre to the adjoining multi-storey car park has worsened.
The leak, which has persisted for months, was initially reported on in October 2024 when it was described as ‘an accident waiting to happen’ by a local shopper.
Then, in March 2025, the council said it was ‘working to procure repairs to the bridge to enable works to take place later in 2025.’
In October, the council said significant further works were required, which would require the securing of capital funding.

Now, the issue has yet worsened, with no confirmed fix date in sight.
A North Northamptonshire Council spokesman said: “We have carried out an inspection of the roof structure and are scoping the works required to address the leaks. We will then look to seek the necessary capital funds to address the works. We are also arranging regular maintenance checks to mitigate further problems.”
The leak means shoppers going to and from the car park into the centre are having to navigate around the affected area in the centre of the floor, causing safety hazards for those travelling between the two.
While Swansgate is owned by a third party the car park, as well as the bridge between the two over Commercial Way, is owned by NNC.
