Rothwell woman honoured for life-saving actions

A Rothwell woman’s trip to her gym on a February evening this year has resulted in her being hailed a life-saving hero and being awarded a Royal Humane Society Resuscitation Certificate.

Hollie Byrne was driving along Grafton Street, Kettering, when she saw youths standing over a man lying on the ground. She stopped to offer her help and the youths told her the man was unconscious.

One of the them was on the phone calling for an ambulance and she took over the call from him, explained the situation and was instructed to begin administering cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

She put the man on his back and immediately began CPR which she kept up for 10 minutes until the ambulance arrived.

“The ambulance crew then shocked the man five times with a defibrillator and his pulse was re-started.

Now the CPR Hollie administered before the arrival of the ambulance has been praised as playing a vital role in the man’s recovery.

Andrew Chapman, secretary of the Royal Humane Society, said: “CPR plays an important role in keeping a person whose heart has stopped in the best possible condition to respond to being later shocked with a defibrillator. Undoubtedly the CPR administered at the roadside by Hollie played an important part in the battle to bring the man back from the brink of death.

“Hollie richly deserves the award for her actions that day. At the same time though there are many incidents where lives are saved and those involved never receive wards they deserve because their names have never been put forward.

“We do appeal to members of the public if they hear of incidents in which lives have been saved, sometimes in circumstances where the life savers have put their own lives in danger, to bring them to our attention.”
