Poppies match marks 50 years since Kettering Town FC pioneered shirt sponsorship
Kettering Town Football Club will mark the 50th anniversary of football history when the Poppies don iconic 1976 Kettering Tyres-sponsored replica shirts for their match against Halesowen.
The club changed football forever when it became the first in England to wear a front-of-shirt sponsor – a pioneering move that would go on to reshape the global game.
Originally scheduled for January but postponed due to adverse weather, the club is now preparing to celebrate the milestone on Saturday (April 18) in even greater style, promising a bigger and better occasion for fans and the wider football community.
The story dates back to January 24, 1976, when a simple partnership between Kettering Town FC and local company Kettering Tyres sparked a revolution.

Under the leadership of the visionary Derek Dougan, the team took to the pitch at Rockingham Road wearing sponsored shirts – a decision that stunned the Football Association. The immediate response was a ban and the threat of fines, yet history would ultimately vindicate the club’s boldness.
Within just 18 months, the FA amended its regulations, paving the way for shirt sponsorship to become an integral part of football.
What began in Northamptonshire evolved into a multi-billion-pound global industry, supporting clubs at every level of the game from grassroots to the world’s elite.
Co-owner of the Poppies Nadiya Akhtar-Shahzad said: “Excitement is building across the club and its community. Several members of the original 1976 squad remain regular attendees at matches, providing a powerful and living connection between past and present, and underscoring the enduring legacy of that ground-breaking moment.”

Commemorations at the Latimer Park ground include a pre-match pitch walkout featuring club legends wearing commemorative shirts, with opportunities for fans to meet former players in the Poppies Bar.
A post-match shirt auction, giving supporters the chance to own a piece of history will be followed by live entertainment including a disco and a band.
The crunch match against Halesowen is the final home game of the season as The Poppies seek to secure a place in the play-offs.
Ms Akhtar-Shahzad said: “The evening celebration will bring together the current squad, members of the historic 1976 team, club legends, and local personalities, all united in honouring Kettering Town FC’s unique contribution to football history.
“This landmark event promises to be a fitting tribute – celebrating not only a defining moment from the past, but also the vibrant present and future of the club.
“It promises to be an unforgettable celebration.”
It was 50 years ago that the Poppies’ then CEO Derek Dougan netted a four figure sum to have ‘Kettering Tyres’ blazoned across the club’s home shirts in what was the first-ever example of shirt sponsorship in football in the United Kingdom.
Kettering wore the shirts for the first time when they played Bath City at Rockingham Road before wearing them again for the clash at Weymouth the following week.
The FA ordered the removal of the logo with Dougan taking away four letters to leave ‘Kettering T’ on the shirts. But, when threatened with a £1,000 fine, it was removed completely.
The Poppies, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers applied to carry shirt sponsorship at the start of the next season and, in June 1977, the FA finally conceded.
In June 1977 before the meeting at the Football Association Dougan, representing Kettering at Lancaster Gate, said: “I’m very optimistic that something is going to come out of this.
“It absolutely delights me to think that no-one backed us last year and now they all want to jump on the bandwagon. I hate to say it but I think I’ve been proved right.
“The credit other clubs owe to Kettering when this goes through will be unlimited. Kettering will be remembered as the forerunners in one of the most significant breakthroughs in soccer.”
