Kettering legend Wicky Bear receives award for lifetime of service to Wicksteed Park

Kettering legend Wicky Bear has received a lifetime service award for his unswerving committment to Wicksteed Park.
The iconic mascot dressed for the occasion in a gold bowtie, was on hand – paw, maybe – to greet well-wishers before being lauded by mayor of Kettering Lauren Glanfield.
Wicky, who has entertained hundreds of thousands of visitors to Wicksteed Park, was cheered by fans and staff at the ceremony.
One of the longest-serving mascots in the business, the dungaree-wearing bear remained tight-lipped about the honour, simply giving a thumbs-up of thanks.
Speaking on his behalf, Wicksteed Park director Kelly Richardson said: “Although he can’t speak obviously, because he is a bear, we can see he is extremely happy with this award, which is well deserved, as he is a true legend, both at the park and beyond.
"Although we believe that Wicky Bear may have been first sighted around the park in 2000, our records show that he didn’t actually become a regular until the following year.
“He’s had a few makeovers and glow-ups over the years but one thing is undeniable and that is the joy he brings to our visitors and the way children’s faces light up with excitement when they see him.”
The superstar mingled with park-goers, completing a brief walkabout in the busy park’s shopping area.
Cllr Glanfield said: “Wicky Bear is Kettering’s most famous resident. Wicky has brought joy, happiness and laughter to our town, he is just paw-some!”
For a quarter of a century he has welcomed visitors, posed for photos, taken part in events – and even performed in his own children’s shows in the park theatre.
Wicky’s fame hit the heights when he featured on Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off in 2019 – famously recreated out of meringue by comedian James Acaster.
Other highlights in his quarter of a century career include helping another famous bear, Pudsey, raise money for Children in Need and posing with the FA Cup when non-league Kettering Town FC reached the second round in 2024.
The plaque will be on permanent display in the park’s reception.
