Mini donkeys bring magic to Elm Bank care home

Residents, staff, family and friends at Elm Bank Care Home in Kettering, run by Barchester Healthcare, had a truly special afternoon when  Mediterranean miniature donkeys, Fern and Pepper paid a visit to the homes beautiful garden.

The adorable pair were accompanied by their owner Helen, they captured the hearts of all who went to meet them up close. Helen shared fascinating information about Fern and Pepper, helping residents learn more about these charming miniature animals and their unique personalities. The visit brought smiles, laughter and a wonderful sense of connection, with residents enjoying a chance to stroke, watch and spend quality time with the adorable animals. Helen runs the ‘Magical Mini Donkeys’ from The Deer Farm, based in Desborough that offers a whole host of experiences from  Cream Tea with the donkeys to local visits to schools and care homes.

Tina, Activities Co-ordinator said, “The miniature donkeys really became the stars of the afternoon for all that came to see them. Animal visits to the home create a truly special time for our residents, providing comfort and a chance to reminisce of days gone by. Fern and Pepper really encouraged social interaction with also moments of calm and happiness, we can not thank Helen enough for creating such a magical experience for all here at the home.”

For our residents living with dementia, these meaningful sensory experiences allow for interaction without the need for conversation. Having a variety of activities like these at the home really means a lot to us all here, it is a true reminder that happiness comes in all shapes and sizes and sometimes, it comes on four little hooves.”
