'We're confident we can beat anyone', says Saints ace Litchfield

Tom Litchfield says Saints never lost belief that they could see off Saracens on Saturday, insisting ‘we’re confident we can beat anyone’.

The black, green and gold had led 14-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but they were 17-14 down with eight minutes to go as Fergus Burke put Saracens ahead with a penalty.

Saints refused to lose though, mounting a late charge, with Litchfield superbly setting up Archie McParland for what proved to be the winning try.

And Litchfield, who had opened the scoring for Saints early on, said: "We knew what we were doing off their goal-line drop-out, managed to execute it.

"There was a nice little hole for me and nice delay on the pass from Dingers (Fraser Dingwall). Archie was running the classic nine cheat line inside and he got in.

"It felt nervy but we had chances and we knew we would create something.

"We got our chance and put it away.

"We're confident we can beat anyone and especially when it's a bit scrappy like that, we can come out the right side of it, even when we're not playing our best."

Saints started and finished strongly against Saracens.

"We came out of the blocks really well, got our game on the pitch and sort of let them get back into it in the second half and let them get into the game a little bit," Litchfield said.

"Then it was just a dogfight, it was about who wanted it more and luckily we came out on the right side of it.

"It was pretty scrappy, a lot of penalties, ill discipline and we couldn't really get our game out there so we'll look at that in the week.

"We're just really happy to get the win and it meant a lot to the boys to get it.

"I am a football fan and it's such a cool experience to play in these football stadiums.

"Our stadiums tend to be a bit smaller so coming to play here is amazing."

Litchfield added: "It was an amazing stadium and we spoke about how good it would be to have a good story to go with it.

"We left it late, but we got that good story for this amazing stadium."

Saints lost Fin Smith to concussion during the first half, meaning there was a backline reshuffle with Litchfield moving to the wing.

"I'm quite happy out there and I'm happy to slot in there, especially when we go 6:2 on the bench," Litchfield said of his wide role.

"It's nice they trust me to go out there and I do the best I can out there."

Next up for Saints is a home round of 16 clash with Castres Olympique on Friday night (kick-off 8pm).

"We love European nights," Litchfield said.

"Castres are a big French team coming to town so we'll see how we go with them."
