Diamonds produced an impressive performance as they claimed a 2-0 victory over fellow high-fliers Cambridge City at Hayden Road on Tuesday night.

And, with previous leaders Moneyfields suffering their first loss of the season in a 3-2 defeat to Uxbridge, Diamonds moved to the summit in the Evo-Stik South League East on goal difference.

The challenge now is to try to stay there and boss Peaks, who has now seen his team win five of their last six league matches, is expecting another stern test this weekend when they entertain seventh-placed Hartley Wintney.

“We have a really tough game tomorrow (Saturday),” Peaks said.

“I watched Hartley Wintney earlier this season and they are probably one of the best teams I have seen. They will want to come here spoil our run. It’s a good challenge for us.

“I have said for weeks that this team is capable of going on a run of wins and we are doing that at the moment.

“If we can win tomorrow then it will be brilliant because it will be another three points on our total.

“We would love to pull away but this league is going to be tight. A lot of teams will take points off each other and that showed the other night with Uxbridge winning at Moneyfields.

“We have a good, strong group here and it’s my job to make sure they don’t get complacent and work even harder.”

Peaks moved to strengthen his squad earlier this week with Jack Westbrook joining Diamonds after making over 150 appearances for Banbury United.

And the manager believes the timing of the move is perfect.

“Jack is a fantastic player, he’s going to be a great addition,” Peaks added.

“He can cover a variety of positions and I just felt that with Fernando Toxtle-Bell leaving, Darryl Smith not always being available and Claudiu Hoban having a few issues with his work at the moment, it was a chance to get him in.

“He is a big strong boy and he will be good for the club.”
