Setchell's pride in defeat as Steelmen's Trophy adventure comes to an end at Kidderminster

Gary Setchell declared himself proud of his Corby Town team as they turned in a spirited performance before losing 3-0 at higher-level Kidderminster Harriers to bow out of the Isuzu FA Trophy at the the second round stage.

The Steelmen had already upset the odds at Quorn and Spalding United in previous rounds, and things also looked to be going to plan against a side from two divisions higher at Aggborough as the match remained goaless going into the closing seconds of the first half.

But an unfotunate slip from defender Rhys Kelly allowed the Harriers in to score the opener through Luke Spokes on the stroke of the interval, and then a ruthless home side added two more in the second half to wrap up the win and ease into round three.

The Steelmen had their moments in Worcestershire, and although Setchell was left a little frustrated that his side didn't show what they can do as an attacking force, he couldn't fault their commitment against their Step 2 hosts.

"We gave a really good account of ourselves," Setchell told @corbytownfc. "Kidderminster made us feel unbelievably welcome and the manager has shown us total respect by playing a full team, and whatever we did they were just so efficient.

"They were one step ahead of us in every department, but for 44 minutes the game plan was there and it was working.

"We had our little moments where a better ball could have got us in, and it is really unfortunate for the first goal.

"Rhys has got in a really good position, the ball is flicked on and he is in control of the situation and he has just lost his feet from under him and it was great awareness from the lad to square it and it was 1-0.

"In the second half we have conceded from a set-piece, which is disappointing, and then we have had to open up and Kidderminster have then shown me that I was right to keep it tight in the first half because they absolutely tore us apart for the last 15 or 20 minutes without putting the finishing touches on it.

"We think 3-0 probably flattered them a little bit, but in the last 10 minutes they could have probably ran in four, five or six which would have been really harsh on us.

"But we will never know, if we had got into half-time at 0-0 then our confidence would have grown, anxiety in the ground would have grown, but it didn't because they scored."

The Steelmen were cheered on by more than 300 travelling supporters in a crowd of 1,500, and Setchell is hoping they went home proud of their team.

"When you come to places like this, you need a little bit of luck, you need them not to be at it, which unfortunately they were, and you need us to be unbelievable, which we were without the ball, the players gave all they had," said the Corby boss.

"If we are going to be a little bit critical, in the moments we had the ball we were a little bit hot potato and just clearing our lines and having a breather, rather than trying to find a blue shirt.

"But we have had an unbelievable run, it has been a great experience, we have given the fans a day out, and hopefully we have made a few quid for the club with this cup run.

"We now have to concentrate, regroup, and make an assault on getting into the top five for starters, and then anything beyond that would be great."

While they were in Trophy action, the Steelmen dropped out of the top five of the Pitching-In Northern Premier League as they were leapfrogged by Lichfield City and Basford United, who both claimed three points on Saturday.

Sixth-placed Corby can quickly get back into the promotion places though as they travel to fifth-placed Basford on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm), knowing a win will see them climb to second in the table.
