Poor goals frustrate Steelmen manager Wright

Tommy Wright admitted Corby Town were guilty of giving away two 'poor' goals as their problems at the foot of the Vanarama National League North grew with a 2-1 defeat at AFC Fylde last night (Tuesday).

The Steelmen went into the clash with the promotion contenders four points adrift of safety following the 4-1 home loss to North Ferriby United at the weekend.

And they remain rooted to the bottom after two goals from Danny Rowe sealed the home side’s success while Kalern Thomas pulled one back in stoppage-time.

And Wright was left disappointed as the Steelmen frustrated their hosts before they finally broke the deadlock on 43 minutes and it wasn’t until the very end when Rowe struck his second to complete the victory.

“I wanted us to be in the game for as long as possible,” Wright said.

“And I thought the boys defended very well for 43 minutes but their first goal has come from our throw-in.

“Instead of hitting the the line or even using a long throw like we normally would, we conceded possession cheaply and they have hit us on the counter-attack.

“We went from having a couple of options at a throw-in to doing nothing and going 1-0 down.

“It’s frustrating because the boys had stuck to the gameplan until that point.

“But we kept things pretty much the same and got to the last 15 minutes and threw three lads on in a bid to get something.

“But they have had a shot and followed it up while we didn’t react. It was another poor, poor goal to give away. And it also came after Ben Milnes had missed a decent chance.

“I think we showed battling qualities to go and get the goal late on but it was too late for us.

“It was another tough game against a good side and you can’t afford to gift them goals.

“We know what situation it has left us in and we know we need to start picking up points very quickly.”

The Steelmen are now preparing for another tough trip to play-off chasing Tamworth on Saturday.
