Boss Sandy tells Diamonds they have to deal with play-off pressure ahead of St Neots clash

Elliot Sandy has told his AFC Rushden & Diamonds players they have to learn to handle the pressure of being play-off contenders ahead of Tuesday night's crunch clash with St Neots Town at Hayden Road (ko 7.45pm).

Diamonds' four-match winning run was called to a halt on Saturday with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Boldmere St Michael's, with Sandy's side giving up a 1-0 half-time advantage to suffer defeat.

They quickly have the chance to get things back on track when they host second-from-bottom St Neots on Tuesday, knowing a win will see them rise to sixth in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division, and to within just three points of the play-offs, with a game in hand.

And Sandy wants to see his side shrug off their weekend disapppointment and get back to winning ways against a St Neots side that edged off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win against relegation rivals Loughborough Students on Saturday.

"St Neots have had a great win, so they will be aiming to go on a run to stay up," Sandy told @AFCRD.

"It is going to be a hell of a fight, St Neots will be fired up so we have to win the battle.

"We are probably the least likely (to get in the play-offs) but we have put ourselves in a great position.

"Others are slipping up around us as well, so suddenly we have that pressure on us and it is how we deal with it, and hopefully by April we will still be in with a chance, but we have a lot of tough games to come.

"I am just glad we are in this position."

And he then added: "Saturday was the first loss in five and we are in great form, so teams are going to come here and be desperate to beat us, because we are on that run.

"When you are up there, everybody wants to beat you and take a shot at you, so you need to be able to manage that.

"Maybe Saturday was the kick up the backside we need, and we will find out on Tuesday because it is a quick turnaround and we will see what we are made of.

"It is still all to play for and we will dust ourselves down and try to be better next time."
