If you’re making plans for this Christmas, and the New Year ahead, think about the best gift you could give next year - a loving and stable foster home to a child.
This Christmas, around 1200 children in Northamptonshire are in care - and across the UK there are more than 107,000 young people in the care system.
What better gift to give a child next Christmas than a chance to improve their life through fostering, and the emotional warmth of a family environment and the comfort of belonging.

Maybe next year, you could make a difference
There is a shortage of carers nationwide and it is predicted that by 2026 there will be a shortage of 25,000 carers in England.
More foster carers are needed across the UK to provide children and young people with safe and supportive homes.
Perhaps that could be you.
Will you have room for an extra person around the Christmas dinner table in 2025? Can you hang an extra Christmas stocking on the fireplace? Do you want to bring comfort and joy into the life of a young person?
Natalie Powell, of Innovate Services, which supports fostering in Northamptonshire, says: “All children are deserving of a secure and loving family Christmas and fostering is a huge platform for good, and providing that magic.”

Who can foster?
You might think fostering is out of reach, but the truth is, many people already have the skills needed to make a difference in a child’s life.
Whether you’ve worked as a teacher, nurse, coach, community worker, or even just been a parent yourself, those skills can easily translate into fostering.
To become a foster carer, all you need is:
- To be over 21 years old.
- A spare bedroom dedicated to a foster child.
- A desire to support and nurture children or young people.
Natalie says: “As we start to look to Christmas, and the new year that follows, it’s a good time to ask ourselves whether fostering could be in any of our futures in the coming year.
“It can take an average of six months to go through the fostering application process, from enquiry through to approval, but our fostering team can help you make this as straightforward as possible and can answer any questions you may have along the way.”
The different types of fostering
Says Natalie: “It’s not about having a perfect background it’s about having space in your life, both physically and emotionally, to welcome a young person in need.”
Not every foster placement is the same. Fostering options can be more flexible than you might think, it is worth exploring the types of fostering available. Fostering can fit into your life in a variety of ways:
Emergency fostering: Providing a safe space for children for a few days in urgent situations.
Respite care: Offering short-term support to give other foster carers a break.
Short-term care: Caring for children for weeks or months while longer-term plans are made.
Long-term care: Becoming a stable, permanent family for a child who cannot return to their birth family.
Even if you’re unsure about long-term commitments, starting with emergency or respite care could be the first step toward changing a child’s life.
Keeping it local for children
Says Natalie: “No one wants to see any child in care at Christmas not being able to experience the joy of a family Christmas.
“If there are people who have a change someone’s life, people who are confident with dealing with children, then perhaps think ahead and make a difference next year.”
The need for local foster carers is so important. Foster carers allow a child’s life to be transformed while supporting them to thrive in their community.
Children can remain in the place they know, stay in contact with their friends, and maintain communication with their families.
Benefits of fostering with your local authority
By fostering with your local authority, you’ll not only benefit from comprehensive support and resources, but you’ll also be joining a community dedicated to improving outcomes for local children.
There can be financial support, training and development, 24/7 support, funded childcare to support your family life and additional allowances.
