Join with the RBLI's Tommy in the Window Campaign
Everyone can join in a wonderful effort to celebrate VE Day and thank our national heroes with the Royal British Legion Industries charity.
The charity’s Tommy in the Window campaign asks you to purchase and display a specially designed Tommy figure in your window, and enter into lockdown festivities for VE Day.
Victory in Europe Day, more generally known as VE Day, celebrates the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on May 8, 1945.
Our nation remembers the date during another very difficult time for our country. We remember all those who served to win our peace, and those who gave the greatest sacrifice for our freedom.
This is a time when we face a different type of threat. More than ever, it is good to remember we got through before by pulling together.
Established in 1919, Royal British Legion Industries helped and supported many wounded, injured and sick ex-Forces personnel returning from war and has continued ever since, expanding its services through funds that it raises through charitable donations.
RBLI Tommy represents military services and all those who served. Origins of the term Tommy are not really known, but it’s probable that the term comes from Tommy Atkins, slang for a common soldier in the British Army. The term Tommy became a generic name used by the war office in 1815.
Royal British Legion Industries, separate to The Royal British Legion, today runs a social enterprise factory called Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, provides care and assisted living for older veterans, accommodation for families, adapted homes for veterans with disabilities, and emergency accommodation for homeless veterans.
Medway Lindy Hoppers support RBL Industries’ Doorstep Dance campaign and will help you to learn or relearn routines such as the Charleston Stroll so that on May 8 you can dance on your doorstep with socially distanced neighbours.
