Voi e-scooter 'trial' in North Northamptonshire extended for another two years

Voi e-scooters will be available for a further two years across North Northants following another extension of the trial which was first launched in 2020.

The e-scooter trial was launched in Kettering in December 2020 before being extended across North Northants in early 2021.

And it has now been confirmed that the scheme has been extended again by another two years.

A spokesman for North Northants Council said: “We can confirm that we have extended the trial with Voi for another two years from May 2026.

"This extension will give Voi the certainty to invest in further improvements to the service across North Northamptonshire.

"The service is used by thousands of residents each month and provides a lifeline for many to get to work.

"Currently about 40 per cent of journeys are work-related and we hope to see this figure increase as more residents switch to this method of travel.

"As always, we remain committed to working with Voi and the police to ensure the scheme is safe for all road users.”

E-scooters are available in Burton Latimer, Corby, Higham Ferrers, Kettering, Rushden and Wellingborough.

Since the scheme’s launch to December 2025, there have been 2.6 million trips with 5.19 million km travelled and 55,073 unique riders.

Project bosses say the scheme has saved 1.1 million car journeys and saved 471 tonnes of CO2.

However, Wellingborough and Rushden MP Gen Kitchen recently met with Voi and NNC to discuss issues raised with her over the use of e-scooters.

Writing on her Facebook page, the MP said: “I often hear concerns about the use of e-scooters in Wellingborough and Rushden so I called a meeting with Voi, North Northamptonshire Council and the police to discuss issues that have been raised with me.

"At this meeting, I discovered that NNC have recently extended the trial period for Voi scooters in our area.

"We know there are many benefits of e-scooters but if the trial is being extended, the company must address the genuine concerns people have.

"One of my follow-up actions is to propose a list of areas where they should be restricted, which Voi have agreed to consider.

"I am keen to see them banned in busy pedestrian areas such as Market Street in Wellingborough town centre, around schools and the Greenway in Rushden.”

Any incidents, misplaced or damaged vehicles can be reported directly to Voi for investigation.

Reports should include the four- digit ID on the e-scooter (where possible), ID, location and time of the incident.

Users can be either warned or temporarily banned via Voi. Repeat rule breaking results in a permanent ban.
