Rushden charity donations benefit hospital patients

A Rushden charity has handed over hospital packs for patients in honour of a late member.

Rushden & District Lions recently made up the packs for patients who are urgent admissions or for the elderly, who would probably not have toiletries with them.

The idea for the packs came from late former Lion Norma Varney, who kindly left a gift to the Rushden & District Lions in her will.

To honour Norma, the group made 100 packs for both men and women.

Each pack includes a flannel, soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner.

Men’s packs also include a razor and shaving foam, while women’s packs include an absorbency pad.

On Wednesday (September 2) Rushden & District members visited Hazelbrook ward at Isebrook hospital in Wellingborough with some of the made-up packs.

A Lions spokesman said: “The staff were very grateful as the ward had run out of toiletries and as the NHS has financial constraints at this time, they were so grateful to receive these packs which would help their patients tremendously.

“We had previously issued some to Kettering hospital and I believe that some were left in the emergency department at Kettering.

“Lions International is a worldwide service organisation.

“We don’t just raise money or give money, we try to help in practical ways wherever we can.”
