Purchase completed for land in Rushden with plans for new town cemetery

The purchase of land off Bedford Road in Rushden has now been completed and will be used to build a new cemetery in the town as the one in Newton Road is ‘rapidly reaching full capacity.’

Rushden Town Council announced the purchase in March 2025 and one year later, the sale has been finalised, with the intention of protecting the area as a dedicated green space as well as being the site of a new cemetery and sporting facilities.

A town council spokesman said: “This land will enable us to provide additional green space and amenity/sporting facilities, together with provision for a much-needed new cemetery.

“This land has been purchased with protective covenants to ensure the area will remain protected green/amenity space for future generations.”

Newton Road Cemetery in Rushden has been used for burials since late 1880 and since 2000 it has been under the management of Rushden Town Council. The site is reaching the limits of its boundaries so provision has been sought at new sites.
