Leaking Kettering swimming pool to close for emergency repairs

Kettering Swimming Pool will be closed after a leak near the pool’s tank was discovered.

The pool in London Road will close for 13 days for essential repairs and improvements to facilities from Monday, August 24, and reopen on Monday, September 7, ready for the term-time schedule which includes school swimming.

Contractors will have to excavate an area of the poolside after investigations identified the leak is associated with pipework located behind the pool tank – the work will cause ‘significant noise disruption’.

The current pool was opened in 1984 and has needed costly investment in recent years, having been forced to close in 2017 after ceiling panelling fell into the water. In November last year, the pool closed temporarily due to a fault in the pool’s air handling system.

Cllr Brian Benneyworth, Executive Member for Housing, Health and Leisure, said: “We understand that the temporary closure will be disappointing for our regular swimmers, clubs and other users, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. However, these essential works are necessary to address a leak affecting the main pool tank and to protect the long-term operation of the pool as a safe, welcoming and high-quality environment for everyone who uses it.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding whilst these important works are carried out.”

While the pool is closed, North Northants Council will also carry out additional improvement and maintenance projects.

The poolside shower area will be refurbished, ‘significantly enhancing’ the facility for customers.

Other essential maintenance and housekeeping works will also be carried out to help maintain the overall quality, safety and appearance of the centre.

The gym at the complex will remain open throughout the closure period and will continue to operate as normal.

Freedom Leisure, which operates the facility on behalf of North Northamptonshire Council, will be contacting all affected customers directly with further information regarding the temporary closure and any impact on swimming activities, lessons and memberships.

Alternative pools operated by Freedom Leisure will be open during the closure period and include the Nene Centre, Thrapston, and the Splash Leisure Pool, Rushden.

Other pools are also available across the area including Rothwell, Corby, Wellingborough and Market Harborough.

Customers with any questions regarding the closure are asked to contact Freedom Leisure by email at [email protected]
