Delayed work starts on new Kettering Ise Lodge section of Northamptonshire Greenway off-road route for walkers, wheelers and cyclists

Work on Kettering section of Northamptonshire Greenway off-road route for walkers, wheelers and cyclists has started, a year after it was first announced.

Funding from the Kettering urban extension at Hanwood Park to North Northants Council (NNC) has paid for work on an off-road route for walkers, wheelers and cyclists in the town.

A new section will run from Deeble Road in Kettering to Grantown Close running parallel to the River Ise connecting into the already surfaced route through to Barton Road near Kettering Skate Park.

Work on the Ise Lodge stretch was due to start in autumn 2025 – part of the over 350km of routes planned connecting settlements within the North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) area and neighbouring authorities.

So far five sections of the ambitious countywide network of surfaced paths have been completed – with the sixth, the Griffin Trail between Braybrooke and the Brampton Valley Way still awaiting completion due to land owner wrangles.

Cllr Greg Wilcox, the council’s executive member for communities said: “The Greenway continues to grow, and I know from speaking to residents just how loved the existing sections are so it is great news that work is starting on this new section. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their patience whilst works are undertaken - I know the end result will be worth it.”

As part of the works, a butterfly bank will be created from a large mound of earth excavated during the construction. Crescent in shape, the bank will be planted with wildflower seeds to support winged insects.

The stretch of the Greenway is funded through Homes England capacity funding for the Hanwood Park development to help facilitate or alleviate congestion and encourage active travel in and around the area.

Leader of NNC, Cllr Martin Griffiths added: “The Greenway is something that we can be truly proud of and the initiative continues to grow from its modest beginnings to something that can be enjoyed by thousands of residents, their families and visitors across North Northamptonshire.”

Works are expected to take about 12 weeks from July 20, 2026 to complete.
