More motorists are being caught speeding through Chowns Mill roundabout despite six months of warnings from police.

Latest figures show the number of drivers caught going to fast in the area INCREASED by around 25 per cent in September.

Around 1,000 offences a month were detected during the first three months after work to upgrade the junction of the A6 and A45 near Higham Ferrers started in April.

But September's figure was more than 1,250 as drivers ignored a 40mph limit brought in to protect workers.

Police believe the increase may be in part down to more vehicles on the roads now than there were back in April.

But Northamptonshire Police Safer Roads Operations Manager, Matt O’Connell, said: “It’s always disappointing, despite all the campaigns and warnings about speeding, that so many drivers still choose to drive at excess or inappropriate speeds.

“We cannot be any clearer — speeding kills. It is one of the four biggest causation factors in collisions.

"Driving even just a few miles per hour over the speed limit can have extreme consequences, leaving families devastated by the loss of loved ones.

"The 40mph restriction is in place to protect the staff working on the Chowns Mill site where there are large sections with no central barrier and areas with excavations and heavy machinery.

"Enforcement locations were created on the various approaches to the roundabout following numerous reports of excess speed and inappropriate driving through the roadworks, increasing risk to the drivers themselves, the workforce and other motorists"

Another 358 were snapped coming from Rushden on the A45 and 322 on the Stanwick side of the junction.

A further 180 fell foul of the speed cameras westbound on the A45 at Stanwick.

Offences between April and July included one motorist caught doing 101mph through the roadworks.

Highways England's £24million project to upgrade the junction includes widening the A45 and A6 and redesigning the roundabout as a 'half hamburger' layout with a new link road connecting the A6 North and A5028.

New signalled crossings will be built to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians to cross.

Work is due to be completed late next year or in early 2022.
