A motorbike was clocked travelling at a staggering 101mph in a 40mph restriction through the Chowns Mill roadworks.

The temporary restriction is currently in place as part of the A45 Chowns Mill improvement works which started in February and are set to take 22 months to complete.

The motorcyclist was caught flouting the rules on Wednesday while officers were carrying out checks at the location which has been flagged up as a speeding hotspot.

Safer Roads Operations Manager, Matt O’Connell, said: “Speeds like this are completely unacceptable and show a complete disregard for the rider’s own safety and that of other motorists and the workforce at the site.

“The restriction at this location is needed to protect the workforce and the public from an active work area with excavations, heavy machinery and incomplete central barriers.”

Police recently started carrying out speed checks at the Chowns Mill junction after repeated reports of motorists going too fast.

Since enforcement started on May 14, police have detected 532 offences associated with Chowns Mill.
