Corby shooting trial jury begins second day of deliberations

A jury will today continue considering an attempted murder charge against a Corby man.

Yesterday (Tuesday, June 30) the jury was sent out to consider verdicts in charges of attempted murder, and possession of a knife and gun, relating to defendant Matas Sukaitis.

The 21-year-old is accused of shooting Lennon Tierney, who was then 17, in Hazel Wood in Corby on April 11 last year.

The jury was sent out at 11.34am and spend three-and-a-half hours discussing the case.

The 12 members returned into court at 4pm and Her Honour Judge Rebecca Crane sent them home for the night, warning them that this was a crucial stage of the trial and they must not discuss the evidence with anyone else.

The judge told them to return for an 11am start today, and confirmed they would be released at 4pm today in order to give them time to get home to watch the England world cup game against DR Congo which kicks off at 5pm. When she advised them of the slightly earlier finish, one jury member pushed his luck with the question: “3.30pm?”.

Matas Sukaitis, 21, of Chaucer Close, Corby, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a knife and possession of a firearm. He denies all the charges against him.

The trial continues.
