A lateral flow testing centre set up to try to find people who have asymptomatic coronavirus has been hailed a huge success.

The centre at Lodge Park Sports centre was set up a week ago in the midst of Corby's high Covid-19 infection rates to test local keyworkers who may have the virus but might not be aware of it.

Although lateral flow tests are not 100 per cent effective, they do provide a useful safety net for catching many people who may be transmitting the virus but have not gone for a PCR test because they are not showing symptoms.

Corby Council leader Tom Beattie has confirmed that capacity at the site will now be extended so more people can benefit.

Speaking at this afternoon's (Friday, January 29) Covid-19 county press conference, he said that it was staffed by council employees who had volunteered to work there. "It's working really well," he said.

"It's working at 100 per cent capacity. Appointments at the centre are going to be increased next week. We should be seeing something like five hundred people a day going through the centre. That's positive.

"It's comforting to see what is, albeit slight, at least a reduction in the levels that we have been seeing in Corby recently and that's a reason to be thankful but it's not a reason to be complacent. There are serious issues still facing us and it's important we continue to observe the guidance.
