The future of a chain store in Wellingborough's Swansgate Shopping Centre remains unclear.

Argos in the shopping centre's Spring Lane is currently closed, with online searches for store details saying it is 'temporarily closed.'

But shoppers have taken to social media to question whether the closure is actually permanent.

One Facebook post said: "Anyone know what’s happening with Argos in the centre?

"Been closed since lockdown, has it permanently closed there?"

The question led to a series of replies, including: "Not permanently closed that we know of.

"Won't be open this side of Xmas and find out end of December what's happening."

Another commenter said: "I don't think it's opening anytime soon, I've been collecting my bits click and collect from Sainsbury."

And one person said: "I doubt it will re-open TBH.

"Online and click and collect is the future."

Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury's, has several other standalone stores in the county which remain open, including Rushden and Kettering.

In other areas, some Argos stores have relocated and now operate from within a Sainsbury's supermarket.

When the Northants Telegraph asked Sainsbury's about the Wellingborough store, they were unable to confirm whether it will be re-opening or not.

The spokesman said: “As we continue to learn how our customers want to shop with us we are progressing the phased re-opening of Argos standalone stores, while keeping safety our highest priority.

“Customers can find their nearest open store by visiting the store locator page on our website.

"We will keep our customers and colleagues updated on our plans.”
