A man who brought a cheer to Burton Latimer at the height of lockdown by taking his daily exercise dressed as Spider-Man was on hand to open the town's new McDonald's today (Wednesday)

Brett Owen started running through the streets in the superhero costume in April as millions were forced to stay home because of the Covid crisis.

Doing so gave children something to smile about and raised money for KGH's Twinkling Stars Appeal - and earned him the responsibility of cutting the ribbon at the fast-food giant's new restaurant as a community hero.

Brett said it was a great honour to be recognised for his volunteering.

He said: "It's not every day you get to open a McDonald's!"

The ribbon on the restaurant and drive-thru was officially cut at 11am with customers arriving as it opened to get their Big Mac fix.

The new branch has been built just off the A6 as part of the Segro Park development and is owned and operated by McDonald’s franchisee Glyn Pashley.

It's Glyn's 17th McDonald's restaurant, having started out in Rugby and expanding across Northamptonshire and beyond.

But the new Burton Latimer restaurant will look different to every McDonald's in the country.

Glyn said: "This is the first building of its kind with this specific design and it's the way our restaurants will look going forward."

Because of the Covid crisis the restaurant currently has reduced capacity with table service and screens to separate diners.

It will initially create 75 jobs for local people and could have as many as 100 staff as time goes on.

It will be offering delivery through Uber within three weeks and will also have a dedicated waiting area for delivery drivers so they don't take up space in the restaurant.

Burton Latimer mayor Cllr John Currall was also at the restaurant this morning for the grand opening.

He said: "This is a fantastic asset for the town and it's a wonderful new building.

"It's nice to see local people are being employed and the town council wishes the franchisee and all involved the best wishes for this venture."
