Monkhouse’s life revisited

A new play following the highs and lows of the late comedian Bob Monkhouse is coming to Northampton.

Starring Simon Cartwright as Monkhouse and written by Alex Lowe, ‘The Man Called Monkhouse’ will show at the Royal & Derngate Theatre on Tuesday September 29.

The story follows a mid-90s Monkhouse, who finds that his treasured joke books have been stolen. The dilemma forces Monkhouse to reflect on his difficult childhood, his whirlwind television career and his eventual rebirth as a comic genius.

The divisive comedian is at the heart of the play, which is described as “affectionate, funny and moving”. It explores the trials and tribulations of a comic who was largely “misunderstood”.

Leading star Cartwright once performed with Monkhouse himself on the BBC’s Opportunity Knock.

Writer Alex Lowe has workedon a variety of television shows and plays. Director Bob Golding is best known for his performance as Eric Morecambe in the Olivier Award-winning play Morecambe.
