WingHandsBSL celebrates BSL success at St James CE Primary School

Pupils at St James CE Primary School, part of PDET, are celebrating another successful year of learning British Sign Language (BSL). The programme continues to thrive, with even more pupils achieving above the expected BSL Level 1 standard than last year.

Led by Miss Felton and supported by Tanya Wing, Director of WingHandsBSL, children have developed excellent signing skills while learning about Deaf culture, equality, accessibility and inclusion, helping to create a more understanding and inclusive school community.

The school was delighted to welcome Jane Birch, who joined the celebrations as pupils proudly received their BSL Level 1 certificates. Tanya Wing presented the certificates after delivering the workshops, assessments and ensuring pupils successfully met the required learning outcomes.

The school also thanks Beckett's and Sargeant's Educational Foundation for generously funding the programme.

Headteacher Sarah Beach said: "BSL has inspired pupils and staff alike. They love their lessons with Miss Felton, and it is a real privilege to see the whole school signing together. We would love to see BSL taught in every school."

By investing in BSL, St James CE Primary School is equipping children with valuable communication skills, empathy and understanding while helping to build a more inclusive community.
