Stronger, healthier, unstoppable: Gemma’s inspiring journey from Slimming World to running for Parkinson’s UK

Three years ago, Gemma’s world felt like it was quietly closing in. At a size 18+, she already knew things needed to change, but hearing the words “pre-diabetic” out loud made it real.

It was no longer about clothes or confidence; it was about her future. The diabetic nurse didn’t sugarcoat it. There was still time to reverse things, she said, but only if Gemma acted.

Lose weight. Change her diet. Take control.

She was scared. Truly scared.

And yet, even in that fear, there was a small flicker of hope. She remembered her doctor mentioning a programme—something supportive, something structured. She was referred for 12 weeks, but she didn’t rush in. Instead, she spent the entire summer of 2023 hesitating. Wondering if she could really do it. Wondering if she would fail.

It wasn’t until November that she finally made the call. Looking back now, that single moment, choosing to try, changed everything. From the very beginning, she was met with kindness. Angela, the Slimming World consultant, welcomed her in a way she’ll never forget. She wasn’t just supportive, she was understanding, warm, and genuinely caring. The fear Gemma had carried for months didn’t disappear overnight, but it began to loosen its grip. For the first time, she felt like she wasn’t facing this alone. What followed was nothing short of life-changing.

By June 2024, Gemma had lost 4.5 stone and reached her target weight. But the numbers only tell part of the story. What she truly gained was confidence, strength, and a sense of possibility she hadn’t felt in years. Through the group, she found friendship, and, unexpectedly, she found a love for running. Running. Something that once felt completely out of reach. Together, Gemma along with slimming world friends signed up for races, supporting each other every step of the way. They laughed their way through muddy 5Ks for Race for Life, crossed finish lines they never imagined they’d reach, and proved to themselves that they were capable of so much more than they had believed.

Last spring, Gemma took another bold step in her journey by joining bootcamp with EB Fitness, and it quickly became a turning point in building her strength as well as her confidence. Guided by Ewan, she discovered a whole new side to her progress, focusing not just on weight loss, but on what her body was truly capable of. His support, encouragement and belief in her made all the difference, especially on the days when self-doubt crept in. Through consistent strength training, Gemma grew stronger both physically and mentally, pushing past limits she once thought were impossible. What started as something daunting soon became empowering, adding another powerful layer to her transformation.

Now, Gemma is preparing for her biggest challenge yet: the London Landmarks Half Marathon on April 12. This time, she is running not just for herself, but for something deeply personal. She is raising money for Parkinson’s UK, a cause that has become close to her heart since her mother-in-law was diagnosed with recently. It’s a way to give back, to channel everything she has gained into something meaningful for others. When she looks back to where she was three years ago, the contrast is overwhelming. She struggled to walk down the road without discomfort or doubt. Today, she is training for a half marathon.

That transformation didn’t happen by chance. It happened because, at her lowest point, she chose to take a chance on herself. And that’s what this journey is really about. Not perfection. Not speed. Not even the weight loss, as incredible as that has been. It’s about courage, the courage to start, even when you’re afraid. The courage to keep going, even when it feels hard. And the courage to believe that change is possible, even when you can’t quite see it yet. Three years ago, Gemma couldn’t imagine this life. Now, she is running towards it, with the help of Slimming World.
