More than 1,000 students help create landmark mural reflecting the heart of Weavers Academy
A striking new mural created with the input of more than 1,000 students has been unveiled at Weavers Academy, transforming a blank wall into a vibrant celebration of identity, aspiration and community.

The artwork, built around the idea '"We Are Weavers", was developed in partnership with local artist and creative facilitator Marvin Kudzanai Mudzongo from Lemon Pop Workshops and forms part of one of the academy's most ambitious creative projects to date.
What began as a simple question to students, "Who are you?", evolved into a whole-school project designed to celebrate the individuality, experiences and values that make up the Weavers community. Every student from Years 7 to 10 took part in workshops, sharing ideas about what matters most to them and helping shape the final design.

The resulting mural brings together themes identified by students including creativity, music, sport, heritage, faith, wellbeing, friendship, personal ambition and favourite subjects. The artwork reflects both the individuality of students and the shared experiences that connect them as members of the Weavers community.
Marvin Kudzanai Mudzongo said: "The brief was to create something colourful and inspiring that represented the school, its students and their aspirations.
"Through the workshops, students shared an incredible range of ideas about who they are, what they value and what they hope to achieve. We wanted to create something that reflected that uniqueness while showing the collective spirit of the school."
The mural forms part of the wider We Are Weavers project, which encourages students to celebrate their identity and sense of belonging while contributing to a shared school story. Alongside the mural, students have also created more than 1,000 individual tiles reflecting their own experiences and backgrounds. These will become a permanent feature of the academy and help shape future installations across the school site.
Principal Emma Merry said: "This has been a genuinely student-led project from start to finish. The final artwork is not simply something for students to look at; it is something they helped create.
"Every student brings their own story, talents and experiences to Weavers. This mural celebrates those individual identities while reminding us that we are all part of one community.
"We hope students see themselves reflected in the artwork and feel a real sense of pride and ownership every time they walk past it."
The mural is the first of several planned creative installations across the academy and will form part of a lasting legacy that future generations of students will continue to build.
