Kettering cyclist Lukas Humplik celebrating after being crowned national champion

Young Kettering cyclist Lukas Humplik has been crowned the Under-14 National Circuit Race Champion after a superb victory at the National Youth Circuit Championships held at Oliver's Mount in Scarborough on Sunday.

Humplik races for Beeston Cycling Club, but his journey in the sport began with the Cyclones, the youth section of Kettering Cycling Club.

He joined the Cyclones at just four years old and spent his formative years developing his skills under the guidance of the club's dedicated coaches and volunteers.

It was there that he built the strong foundations which have helped him progress into one of the country's leading young cyclists, competing at national level in track cycling, cyclocross and, above all, his favourite discipline – road racing.

Away from racing, Humplik balances his demanding training schedule with his studies at Kettering Science Academy, often fitting training rides in before or after school.

His commitment and careful time management have allowed him to combine academic studies with competing at the highest level of youth cycling.

Going into the championships, Humplik was among the favourites after an outstanding season, having finished in the top five overall in every round of the National Youth Circuit Series.

The championship was held on the Oliver's Mount circuit in Scarborough, one of the toughest race venues in the country.

The demanding course features repeated climbs with gradients reaching 20 per cent, making it a true test of strength, endurance and race tactics.

More than 60 riders lined up for the Under-14 boys' race, but the challenging terrain quickly split the field. By the end of the opening lap, riders were already being dropped as the relentless climbs took their toll.

With four laps remaining, only around 20 riders remained in the leading group, with Humplik consistently positioned near the front.

One lap later, he and two other riders launched a decisive attack over the top of the climb to break clear of the rest of the field.

On the final lap, Humplik produced a powerful solo effort on the climb, pulling away from his breakaway companions before crossing the finish line alone, 33 seconds ahead of the second-placed rider to claim the national title in impressive style.

The podium celebrations included the traditional alcohol-free champagne, before Lukas was presented with the coveted National Champion's jersey – white with the distinctive red, white and blue bands – which he will proudly wear for the remainder of the season.

For many people around Kettering, Humplik is already a familiar sight training on the local roads.

Until now he has been seen riding in the blue colours of Beeston Cycling Club, but from now on local riders and motorists will recognise him in the National Champion's jersey.

Humplik's success is a proud achievement not only for him and his family, but also for the coaches, volunteers and riders at Kettering Cycling Club's Cyclones, where his cycling journey first began.

His national title is a wonderful example of how local grassroots clubs, supported by dedicated volunteers and the wider community, can help young athletes achieve success on the national stage.

From a four-year-old learning to ride with the Cyclones to becoming a National Champion, Lukas's story is one that Kettering can be truly proud of.
