Delapré Abbey Celebrates 80 Years of Public Ownership
Delapré Abbey is celebrating a major milestone, marking 80 years since the historic site passed into public ownership on 27th March 1946.
Once a private estate, the Abbey’s future was uncertain in the years following the Second World War. Facing the threat of demolition in the 1950s, it was saved through the determination of local campaigners and went on to serve as the Northamptonshire Record Office, securing its place at the heart of the community until 1992.

Over the decades, Delapré Abbey has undergone a remarkable transformation. Following a period of decline in the late 20th century, renewed community efforts led to the formation of The Friends of Delapré Abbey in 2001, the Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust (DAPT) in 2006, and the beginnings of an ambitious restoration project with an aim to revive and preserve the 900 year history of the site.
The Abbey reopened to the public on 16th March 2018 as a vibrant heritage and events space, welcoming visitors from across the region and beyond. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit, shaped not only by its long history, but by the people who have fought to protect and sustain it.
To mark the anniversary, Delapré Abbey is excited to welcome visitors to explore its history and enjoy taking part in the site’s exciting programme of events for 2026, bringing people together to celebrate its past, present, and future. With community-led events, heritage experiences, and seasonal celebrations, the programme will reflect the spirit of togetherness that has defined the Abbey’s journey over the last eight decades.
Visitors are also encouraged to share their own memories of the site via a dedicated anniversary webpage in which they can contribute their personal connections to the Abbey, sharing their stories from across the last 80 years.
As Delapré Abbey looks ahead, continued investment and development, including the ongoing restoration of the 19th-century stables, aim to ensure the site remains a thriving, accessible space for future generations.
