The Corby-based secondary school, which is part of Brooke Weston Trust, has been praised for its work across four key areas: mental health, healthy eating, physical activity and PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education).

The Healthy Schools Award is run by North Northamptonshire Council as part of its Healthy Schools Service, which supports schools across the borough to improve the health and wellbeing of their pupils. The programme is aligned with national Healthy Schools standards and is independently assessed against clear criteria across the four core areas.

The award reflects a whole-school approach to supporting students’ physical and emotional wellbeing, with staff and students working together to shape initiatives and improvements.

Vice Principal Danielle Eddy, who oversaw the process alongside Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead Emma Toye, said: “I’m really proud of what our students and staff have achieved with this award. It means so much to see them take ownership of their wellbeing and come together to make real changes. This is about the everyday actions that help our young people feel happy, safe and ready to learn.”

Students have played an active role through the school’s Wellbeing Committee, meeting regularly with staff to share feedback and ideas. Discussions have led to substantial changes, including a wider range of food options and increased choice at break and lunchtime.

Year 8 student Kallum, who is part of the Wellbeing Committee, explained how he’s been involved: “We meet with Miss Eddy and Mrs Toye every term about the general wellbeing of the students in the school. We have discussed different and more food options and we have given more choice at break and lunch times.”

Nicole in Year 12 added: “Prior to the meetings we discuss in tutor groups any improvements that we would like in the school, and this will get discussed in the Wellbeing Committee meetings. We have also organised events within school like quizzes and scavenger hunts to promote student wellbeing.”

Younger pupils have also seen the impact, with one student noting an increase in the variety of fruit available during the school day.

Grace, Year 7, said: “In a committee meeting we have discussed having different fruit options at break and lunch times; we now have a wide range of fruits available at breaks and lunches.”

The award reflects a whole-school approach to supporting students’ physical and emotional wellbeing, with staff and students working together to shape initiatives and improvements. Preparing for the evaluation provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the work we do to support students’ mental wellbeing, promote physical activity, and deliver high-quality PSHE education, ensuring all students access a broad and balanced programme that supports their development both inside and outside the classroom.
