Northants stores get ready for annual Record Store Day releases

Record Store Day returns next month, with two shops in Northampton stocking some of this year’s official releases.

Collectors are again expected to be queuing from the early hours of the morning outside of both Spun Out in Gold Street and Vinyl Underground in Abington Street hoping to secure some of this year’s ‘must have’ items.

Record Store Day has been taking place annually since 2008 and seeks to champion independent record shops across the UK.

On Saturday, April 18, there will be more than 500 official releases.

Chris Kent, who runs Spun Out, said: “It’s a big list this year and I’ve had lots of people coming in to request different titles.

“I’ve ordered a lot and this time around there’s a lot of interesting titles.

“We’ve had a lot of people asking about the Taylor Swift release, but there’s been a lot of interest around the Bowie and Muse records.

“I’ve also had a fair few people interested in Looking Outside Your Window which features members of Slipknot, or a studio alias of them.

“KPop Demon Hunters is another which has been popular and there’s two editions of that – the Saja Boys and HUNTER/X.

“James Dean Bradfield’s solo album is another which we’ve had a lot of people ask about.”

Other acts releasing limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day include Alfie Templeman, Black Sabbath, Bring Me The Horizon, Charli XCX, Deafheaven, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, HAIM, Kiss, Lil Peep, Madonna, Olivia Dean, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, Self Esteem, Tom Grennan, Weezer and Xzibit.

At Spun Out, staff will collect written lists from those at the front of the queue and initially limit the numbers inside the shop to manage the flow of people .

Mr Kent added: “We try to keep some kind of order so we pick the records which people are after so you don’t have to go around hunting for them.

“My advice is if there’s definitely something which you think you’re going to want, get down early for it as you can’t reserve Record Store Day items.”

There will be live music during the day at Spun Out by acts including DJ Scottie and Woegetter.

At Vinyl Underground, there will be bacon and sausage rolls and coffee for those queuing early as well as DJs instore too.

Both Vinyl Underground and Spun Out will be opening their doors from 8am with records sold on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and in person only.

Remaining items can be sold by record stores online from Monday, April 20.

The Black Prince in Abington Square will be holding a record fair the same day from 10.30am in its garden with local dealers.

Spiral Archive records will also be holding a half-price sale as part of another record fair taking place at The Lamplighter in Overstone Road from midday.
