Musical show will make 'em laugh

Although the second thought might be the joyous scene of Gene Kelly singing in the rain in the film of the same name.

Wellingborough Operatic Society will be looking to recreate the latter rather than the former when they stage Singin’ in the Rain at The Castle theatre in town next week.

Maurice Kachuk, playing the lead role of Don Lockwood (portrayed by Gene Kelly in the 1952 film), also directs and choreographs the show.

Maurice has been dancing professionally for more than 30 years, performing all over the world.

Phil Watts takes the Donald O’Connor role of Cosmo Brown, with Susie Pack as Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds in the film) and Johanna Beech as Lina Lamont.

A spokesman for the group said: “Wellingborough Operatic Society are thrilled to be presenting this show.

“Don Lockwood really will be Singin’ in the Rain on the Castle stage - but the audience won’t need umbrellas.

“Book now - don’t miss this great musical.”

The much loved musical has been revived for the stage since its original showing in 1952.

It offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late ‘20s, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to “talkies”.

The songs from the show include Make ‘Em Laugh, Beautiful Girl, You Were Meant For Me, Broadway Melody and, of course, the title song.

It will be performed from Tuesday, March 8, to Saturday March 12.
