North produced a sensational display, grabbing four tries to help his team claim a maximum at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday evening.

It hauled them level with Ospreys on five points in Pool 5 and ensured Jim Mallinder’s men will head into December’s double-header with Treviso in good shape.

And North is not downplaying expectations, believing he and his team-mates can make a big splash in Europe’s top tier tournament this season.

“It was a result we all needed,” said the Wales wing. “It was one of those days when I needed a good performance, not just for myself but for the team.

“We had to get a result and Calum Clark was outstanding for us and can carry us forward in this competition.

“It was a difficult task going to Racing Metro last week and we were pretty hard on each other in training this week, we knew after last week’s (20-11) defeat just how tough this pool is going to be.

“The Ospreys came here as a team playing well and playing with confidence so we wanted to start well and we did just that.

“We did not let them play and after a performance like that anything is possible.”

And on his personal heroics, North added: “I was happy with my performance and the four tries finished it off nicely. It wasn’t a bad day in the office.

“This performance is definitely up there, for me personally and for the team.

“We didn’t get the result we needed at Racing Metro last weekend. We knew we had to get on the front foot and a lot of boys stepped up against the Ospreys.”
