Saints star Myler misses England’s World Cup cut

Maro Itoje, Ed Slater and Elliot Daly have also been trimmed from the initial 50-man group ahead of a two-week training camp in Colorado.

More cuts will be made next month as England head coach Stuart Lancaster continues to shape his squad, which will be made up of 31 players when the World Cup begins.

Myler will not be one of them following his latest international blow.

The Saints star still has just one cap to his name, making an appearance as a replacement in a game against Argentina in May, 2013.

He has continually been overlooked for big events and has again lost out, with Owen Farrell, George Ford and Danny Cipriani the fly-halves Lancaster has opted to retain.

Earlier this week, Myler was one of a number of players sent to model the new England kit, but he will not be wearing it in the near future.

“Steve, who is in another really competitive position, has only recently been able to take a full part in training having injured his knee towards the end of last season,” Lancaster said. “But he is getting up to speed now and I am sure he would be ready to come back in should the opportunity arise.

“I have spoken to all the players to explain that things can change very quickly and they can come back in at any point.”

However, Myler’s fellow Saints players Alex Corbisiero, Kieran Brookes, Courtney Lawes, Calum Clark, Tom Wood, Lee Dickson and Luther Burrell remain in the World Cup reckoning.

England will play three warm-up matches, starting with a game against France at Twickenham on August 15, before the tournament opener against Fiji on September 18.
