Saints seek another hot streak as Gloucester game beckons

And while that may be hard to foresee this time round, following Saturday’s stunning 26-15 success at Glasgow Warriors, there is no doubt Saints have finally built some momentum.

Just as they did when beating Leinster in Dublin in December, 2013, Saints saved their best performance for European competition, slaying the Warriors at a bitterly cold Scotstoun Stadium.

And now they head back into Aviva Premiership action sitting on the crest of a wave, desperate to use it to overwhelm Gloucester on Friday and Bath at The Rec eight days later.

That would keep things flowing going into a potentially decisive Champions Cup double-header against Racing 92.

And although mentions of that 13-match unbeaten run two seasons ago are shrugged off, there is no doubt Saints would like to think they can get in that sort of groove this time round.

“We want to build some momentum and we just want to get better every week,” attack coach Alex King said.

“It’s important that we keep to the standard that we hit last week and also try to improve in certain areas.

“Last weekend was our best performance of the season and it needed to be.

“Glasgow are Pro12 champions and deservedly so. We needed to be on top of our game.

“It’s been an up and down start to the season, but you saw the real Saints at the weekend.

“I’m really pleased for the lads that the hard work paid off on the big stage.

“Every week’s a massive game and we need to build on that win from last week now.

“Hopefully it’s going to give us a lot of confidence to know what we’re about.

“We’re getting a few bodies back from injury so the squad’s getting a bit stronger in that respect.”

Saints sit in a lowly 10th position in the Premiership table, having lost three of their first four games.

This Friday they welcome a Gloucester side who they smashed 53-6 on Premiership opening night last season.

But King said: “Gloucester are a good team. They’ve beaten Newcastle away from home and beat Worcester, but they’ve had a mixed start.

“It’s always a battle and I’m just hopeful we can put in a good performance.

“They’ve got players like Charlie Sharples, Jonny May, James Hook, Greig Laidlaw and a big set of forwards.

“They’re coached well and we need to make sure we’re at our best to get the victory.

“The boys have been training well and they are looking forward to Friday to right a few wrongs from where we’ve been at the start of the league season.”
