McMillan made 43 appearances during his time at Northampton, who he initially joined on a trial basis midway through the 2011/12 campaign.

He became a popular figure at the club, proving his worth during a fine end to last season, making five successive starts as Saints claimed Aviva Premiership and Amlin Challenge Cup glory.

The 27-year-old will now return to life in England’s second tier, where he enjoyed spells with sides such as Nottingham and Moseley before moving to Saints.

Bristol are currently top of the Championship, two points clear of Worcester.

And McMillan has been brought in to help make up for the loss of Max Crumpton and Ross Johnston, who have been sidelined with long-term injuries.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to come down to Bristol and compete for a first team place,” said McMillan, who was behind Dylan Hartley, Mike Haywood and Matti Williams in the Saints pecking order

“I know the Championship well – it’s a tough league and there are no easy fixtures.

“With the quality of players and coaching staff at Bristol’s disposal, everything is in place for a promotion push, so I’m excited to play my part.

“I’d like to thank Northampton Saints – the coaches, players and staff - for my time there – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and really developed as a player.”
