Saints coach King praises contribution of ‘fantastic’ Dowson

Alex King has hailed captain fantastic Phil Dowson for his role in guiding Saints’ fledgling stars.

Dowson was skipper for last weekend’s LV= Cup clash against Newcastle Falcons, steering a youthful side to an impressive 37-13 success.

Saints fielded a potent blend of youth and experience, with youngsters such as Tom Collins and Howard Packman combined with the likes of Dowson and Christian Day.

And attack coach King has plenty of praise for the way 33-year-old Dowson led the side in the victory at Franklin’s Gardens.

“You need those (experienced) players because you can’t just throw in 23 kids and hope their energy and enthusiasm gets them through,” King said.

Rugby is one of those games you get better with age because you’ve been through situations before. It’s a really good mix.

“Dowson was fantastic last week. He captained the team brilliantly and he brings a real clarity to what we’re doing.

“He brings a real level-headedness and couple that with the energy and enthusiasm that our young players bring and it’s a good combination.”
