Mallinder, who claimed the prize in 2010/11, is up against Bath’s Mike Ford, Exeter’s Rob Baxter and Wasps’ Dai Young.

The Saints director of rugby has steered his side to 16 wins from 21 league games this season.

Last weekend’s 46-0 win against London Welsh ensured the club would top the Premiership for the first time in its history.

And Mallinder will now hope his men can complete the job by retaining their title with a play-off semi-final lying in wait at Franklin’s Gardens on May 23.

“We have some of the best coaches in the world within Aviva Premiership Rugby ensuring the judging panel had a tough job once again,” said Premiership Rugby’s rugby director Phil Winstanley.

“All four have had very different challenges to face this season - both at home and in Europe - but have emerged from a compelling campaign with a huge amount of credit both inside and outside their clubs.”
